Estanzuela Comiray is an open-pollinated sudangrass cultivar introduced in the 1980s. It is the most widely planted variety in Uruguay. Characterized by high tillering, long narrow leaves, and thin stems (5–15 mm), it reaches over 3 meters in height. It has a branched root system without rhizomes and shows a mix of seed colors — black, dark brown, chestnut, and yellow — within the same lot.
INIA Surubí is an open-pollinated cultivar selected for superior forage production, seed size, and resistance to downy mildew. It has semi-erect growth, fine stems and leaves, and excellent tillering ability. Its seeds are predominantly orange, with yellow, red, brown, and black variants. INIA Surubí seeds are 25–30% heavier than Estanzuela Comiray, and its disease resistance is significantly better.
INIA Titán is a tetraploid annual ryegrass developed from Estanzuela Matador and select European cultivars. It is the first long-cycle variety widely adopted in Uruguay. With intermediate to semi-erect growth, it flowers 25 days later than Estanzuela 284 and does not flower if sown in August. Known for its high cold requirement, extended cycle, and excellent spring growth, it yields 25% more forage annually than Estanzuela 284.
